Sydney Kids OT – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Thinking about occupational therapy for your child? We’ve put together answers to the most common questions parents ask us at Sydney Kids OT.
Do I need a referral to see an occupational therapist at Sydney Kids OT?
No, you don’t need a referral to book an appointment at Sydney Kids OT. Families are welcome to contact us directly to arrange an assessment or therapy session.
If you’d like to access Medicare rebates, you may be eligible for a GP Management Plan (previously known as an Enhanced Primary Care Plan). Ask your GP if this is an option for your child before your first appointment.
Can I claim a Medicare rebate for occupational therapy?
Yes, Medicare rebates are available for occupational therapy sessions under a GP Management Plan. This plan can provide rebates for up to five sessions per calendar year.
If you have private health insurance, you may also be able to claim a rebate. As each policy is different, we recommend contacting your health fund directly to confirm what you’re eligible for.
Is Sydney Kids OT registered for NDIS?
Yes, Sydney Kids OT supports families using self-managed or plan-managed NDIS funding. If your child has a NDIS plan, occupational therapy sessions can often be covered under their funding.
Does my child need an assessment before starting therapy?
If your child has never seen an occupational therapist before, we recommend starting with a comprehensive OT assessment. This helps us understand the underlying reasons for your child’s challenges as well as their strengths.
Assessments may be completed in the first session or across a few sessions, depending on your child’s needs. If your child has been assessed by an OT before, please provide a copy of their previous report.
How many occupational therapy sessions will my child need?
Every child is unique, and the number of sessions depends on their individual goals. Some children benefit from just a few sessions, while others require ongoing support over a longer period.
Our approach is always family-focused — we aim to equip parents and children with strategies that can be used at home, school, and in the community so progress continues outside the clinic.
Do parents need to attend therapy sessions?
We encourage parents to attend sessions where possible. This allows you to learn strategies and activities that can be used at home to support your child’s development.
If you’re unable to stay, your child’s occupational therapist will provide you with a summary of what was covered and recommendations for follow-up at home.
Do you offer home and school visits?
Yes, Sydney Kids OT provides home, preschool, and school visits within a 15-minute travel radius of our clinic. These visits are available when appropriate and in agreement with the child’s school or preschool.
Some children benefit more from therapy in our fully equipped clinic, where we have access to a wide range of tools, resources, and equipment.
What can occupational therapy help with?
Paediatric occupational therapy can support children with:
- Sensory processing and self-regulation
- Fine motor and handwriting skills
- Gross motor coordination and strength
- Attention and focus in school
- Social skills and play
